What does that actually mean?
  • Analyze - To study in depth and separate into parts, identifying and describing in detail the main ideas or characteristics.
  • Compare - To look for similarities and differences between two or more things.
  • Contrast - To specifically look at the differences and dissimilarities between two or more things.
  • Demonstrate - To explain clearly by giving examples.
  • Describe - To give a detailed and comprehensive account of something.
  • Determine - To find something out.  To conclude after reasoning.
  • Discern - To recognize or perceive clearly.
  • Discuss - To explore the implications and the advantages and disadvantages.  Give reason for and against.
  • Explain - To point out information.  To clarify information.  To give reasons for.
  • Highlight - To point out as important.
  • Identify - To point out and describe.
  • Summarize - To explain in concise terms. To overview.
  • Trace - To follow the development or history of a topic from some point in origin.

5 tips to improve college essays.

Check your essay - did you follow these rules?
  1. Avoid using contractions (do not instead of don't).
  2. Simple can be better. Use clear language.
  3. Avoid wordiness.  Omit words like really, very, a lot, so.
  4. Write in the active voice vs. passive voice.  
  5. Use strong verbs to drive your point.
